Cosmoteer is a starship design, simulation, and battle game. Design a fleet of ships by laying out individual rooms and corridors, including cannons, lasers, shields, and thrusters. Battle other starships to earn bounties and use that money to expand your own ship. A dynamic crew and combat simulation makes every design decision important and interesting.
The main page has in-depth descriptions of Cosmoteer's major features.
Cosmoteer's origins can be traced back to when Walt was a young teenage nerd. He was trying to make a pen-and-paper strategy wargame in which players would designs starships on graph paper according to a complex rule system. That game was too much of a chore to be fun and so never got much past the initial concept. But the core idea—designing and battling starships—stuck around in the back of Walt's mind.
Then, in 2011 when Walt was a student at Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center, he needed an idea for an independent study project. So he revived the "starship designer" idea and prototyped it, this time as a computer game.
Originally called Ship Builder, that prototype was fun enough that Walt continued working on it after graduating, testing the game with friends and releasing occasional updates to the public. Eventually he renamed the prototype StarWright.
Fast-forward to mid-2015, Walt was working as a programmer at a mobile games company near San Francisco. StarWright had improved enough that Walt decided to work on it full-time, so he quit his job and devoted himself the game. The first "non-prototype" version of StarWright was released a few months later, and then about a year after that, Walt renamed the game again to Cosmoteer.
